For a truly flaky tasty crust, try shaking the dough! Here’s the pie crust recipe that has had the women in my family dancing around the kitchen for at least 5 generations. It’s also a great way to work off all that pie you’re about to consume!
Grab a large mixing bowl (with a tight-fitting lid).
Stir together:
1 cup flour
½ tsp. salt
Cut in ½ cup of shortening. Put the lid on, and shake the bowl until the dough crumbles into pea-sized balls. IMPORTANT: hold the lid on while shaking. Otherwise it might fly off and your kitchen will become a giant flour-covered mess. You will be shaking for a while, maybe 10 minutes. I’ve been known to put on some music and dance around the kitchen to make the time go faster! 🙂
Gradually add 3 tablespoons of VERY cold water, while tossing dough with a fork. Replace the lid and shake again until the dough forms a ball. Roll out into an approx. 10” circle on a floured surface.
Carefully place circle in 9” pie pan, pressing dough into the form of the pan. Pinch edges and trim excess dough.
Fill and bake according to pie recipe.
Enjoy!
For some added fun, I let my daughter make a treat just for her:
Roll out the left over dough, spread butter on one side and sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon on it. Roll the dough with the toppings on the inside, pinch the ends and bake at 350° until golden brown.
